Polymer products play a unique role in the protection and restoration of concrete structures and in special applications, where their handling properties during application, ability to bond to concrete, wood and steel and their high strength and durability make them the material of choice.
Specification and use of construction polymers requires an understanding of the physico-chemical factors such as viscosity and surface tension during application and the engineering and technical properties of the cured polymer. Because of the complexity of polymers, this understanding is often lacking in the construction industry.
Not all polymers have the same resistance to heat, chemicals and exposure to constant, sudden or changing stresses. Polymers also behave differently than materials such as steel and concrete. The performance properties of polymer products are far more affected by time and temperature than common construction materials. These differences must be considered in the specification and use of construction polymer materials.
