CCS Grout products feature a wide selection of semi-rigid epoxies and polyureas for filling control joints. These semi-rigid products are designed to: resist difficult environments, absorb heavy wheel loads, protect joint corners, prevent contamination of shrinkage cracks and maintain esthetics. These products may also function as insulators for filling sawcuts after the insertion of wiring for induction loops, traffic signals, and airport runway lighting (FAA P606 specification). Polyurea and epoxy selection factors include the impact loads, temperature ranges, substrate shrinkage, temperature cycling movement, presence of moisture, and sawcut or joint preparation. Viscosities range from self-leveling liquids to non-sag pastes.

Also included in the CCS Grouts are the warm and cold weather segmental bonding pastes for joining sections of precast segmental bridges. Designed for critical load bearing applications, these products feature high heat deflection temperatures (HDTs) and exhibit excellent wet and damp substrate bonds. Capable of supporting sustained loads, including seismic reinforcement and bolt grouting, the Dowel/Rebar/Bolt products are our highest performance pastes and are designed to work over a wide range of ambient temperatures.

CCS Polyurea Joint Fillers

Fast cure speed is the most desired polyurea benefit because often the filled joint can be opened to traffic within 1-2 hours. However, it is often impractical to hand-mix the faster polyureas, so an automated mix pump may be useful on large jobs for high production rates. Unlike epoxies, polyureas can cure in very cold conditions, in some cases as low as -25°F. At this low temperature, an epoxy is virtually dormant and will likely freeze. Usually, the epoxy will cure when the ambient air increases to 40°F or more.

Polyureas are often touted for their greater elongation capability (up to 200+% vs. ~90%). Although neither material is intended for use in joints designed to move (such as expansion joints), the tall proportional cross-section of most control joints causes either material to separate from the side wall if there is significant joint movement because neither can stretch across its thick middle.

Though polyureas are generally softer (lower durometer), they are very tough under abrasive conditions. Tested in a standard Taber test rig, they may exhibit 40% less weight loss after 1000 cycles than control joint epoxies. A cautionary note—use an epoxy primer with a polyurea when in doubt about dampness or moisture.

CCS Epoxy Joint Fillers

Although generally slower curing, this is an advantage if the crack filling is done by hand pouring or a bulk caulk gun because of longer working time. When the substrate is damp, wet, or

contaminated, an unprimed epoxy has a better chance of bonding to the sides of the joint than a high speed polyurea.

When it comes to mixing and tolerance for "eye-balling" the A & B components, epoxies are more forgiving. Polyureas may lose some of their properties if the mix ratio is off by 3-6% or more, whereas epoxies will often cure when the proportions are even further apart.

Most semi-rigid epoxies are harder (higher durometer) than comparable polyureas. This may be a critical factor in floors when there is high point loading across floor joints such as the steel wheels on some pallet jacks. Epoxies are usually a better electrical insulator, which allows our airport product, Control Joint HB™, to be certified as P-606 compliant, the FAA standard for filling runway lighting slots.

Both epoxy and polyurea products are relatively chemical resistant, but the epoxy usually has a slight edge with organic solvents, many acids and some oxidizers and sanitizers used on floors such as bleaches. CCS Grout Primary Uses Features
Dowel/Rebar/Bolt, LWL Paste for dowel/rebar/bolt grouting at moderate to high ambient temperatures. Long work life. 1:1 by volume mix ratio. High HDT and compressive test performance. Used in warmer segmental bonding applications, Injection into wide cracks, Repair of concrete block walls
Dowel/Rebar/Bolt, SWL Paste for dowel/rebar/bolt grouting at low to moderate ambient temperatures. Short work life, fast curing. 1:1 by volume mix ratio. High HDT and strengths. Used in cooler segmental bonding applications, Injection into wide cracks, Repair of concrete block walls
Control Joint Pourable liquid to fill saw-cut control joints, wire slots and traffic loops. Excellent durability for industrial floors. Semi-rigid epoxy for control joints in industrial floors
Control Joint, HB and HBP High build liquid to fill saw-cut control joints, wire slots and traffic loops on sloped surfaces. Meets FAA P-606 (P606) standards for use in airport high voltage runway lighting slots. Thicker product useful on sloped slabs
Polyurea SWL High speed pourable or pumpable polyurea for filling control joints. Cures at low temperatures (to -25°F) and floor can be re-opened in 2 hours or less. Can also be used for rapidly closing wall or floor penetrations. Workhorse for freezer and industrial projects. Best when applied by pump but can be hand applied.
Polyurea LWL Low speed polyurea for patching and hand mixes. Best for repairs and patches. Long work life. Can be blended with dried aggregates for mortar/grout mixes.
